Why the SafeRide Kit is a Must-Have for Every Horse Owner
The Double D Trailers Podcast: Season 3 Episode 1
As horse owners, we know that traveling with our equine companions is both a responsibility and a privilege. Whether you’re headed to a show, a trail ride, or simply transporting your horse to a new location, being prepared for the unexpected is critical. Roadside emergencies can happen at any time, and when they do, you need to act quickly and efficiently—not just for your safety but for the safety of your horse. That’s why Double D Trailers has created the SafeRide Horse Trailer Roadside Safety Kit—your ultimate travel companion for every trip with your horse.
In this episode, Double D Trailers owner Brad Heath breaks down each item that is available in the SafeRide Kit and why they are included.
When you're on the road, anything can happen: flat tires, dead batteries, or unexpected breakdowns that leave you stranded. But being unprepared isn't an option when you're transporting precious cargo. The SafeRide Kit is designed specifically with horse owners in mind, packing all the essential tools and safety items you’ll need in case of a roadside emergency.

Host (Brad): Welcome to the Double D Trailers podcast! Today, we’re talking about something a lot of our listeners have asked about: What should you take with you on a trip with your horse trailer? Specifically, we're diving into our Safe Ride Horse Trailer Kit—a kit we created after not finding a comprehensive safety kit available online.

We designed the Safe Ride Kit to include a range of items that would be helpful if you have an issue during your travels. Here’s what’s inside:
- Ponchos: You never know when you’ll get caught in the rain—super handy, especially during emergencies.
- Wheel Chocks: Essential if you need to park or unhook your trailer.
- Jumper Cables: To jump-start your vehicle or an auxiliary battery.
- Pair of Gloves: Always useful.
- Water Bags: Two collapsible plastic bags that hold 3-5 gallons of water each.
- Safety Vest: To make sure you're visible on the road.
- Duct Tape: The classic tool—useful for temporary fixes on almost anything.
- Flashing Safety Lights: Nine small but bright lights, batteries included, perfect for getting attention at night.
- Safety Cones: Three collapsible cones, helpful for directing traffic and marking your area.
- Twine: Always handy for tying things down or making quick fixes.
- Rechargeable Headlamp: The same type that many pilots use, with multiple brightness levels and emergency flash mode.
- Multi-Purpose Pliers: Pliers that include multiple tools like a knife, screwdriver, etc.
- Electrical Tape: In case you need to deal with any wiring issues.
- Lubrication Oil: Helps to fix sticky windows, door locks, and hinges. A little lubrication can make a big difference.
- Universal Lug Wrench: A foldable 17-inch lug wrench that fits four different lug sizes.
- Rechargeable Portable Tire Pump: Great for flat tires on your trailer or tow vehicle. It’s battery-powered and shows tire pressure on a digital display.

The bag we chose is stylish (thanks to input from our design team) and currently comes in a couple of colors. The only thing we don’t include is the trailer jack itself. We recommend Trailer Aid, which can be found online—it’s bulky and expensive, so it didn't make sense to include in the kit.

We’ve had great feedback on the Safe Ride Kit from those who have bought it so far. I’d love to hear from our listeners: Is there anything you think we missed? Any suggestions for additional items you’d like to see included? Hit us up and let us know!
