SafeTack Reverse Slant Load Horse Trailers: Stress-Free Ride
Reverse load horse trailers provide advantages by allowing horses to face backward during transit. A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior on the "Effects of different positions during transport on physiological and behavioral changes of horses" shows that horses traveling in this position have reduced heart rates and cortisol levels, indicating less stress.
The SafeTack Reverse Slant Load Horse Trailer model by Double D Trailers is a reverse-facing side load horse trailer design that lets you transport your horses easily, safely, and comfortably. The patented SafeTack design, engineered for a safe, balanced, stress-free ride, sets a new standard in horse transportation. This innovative reverse load layout comes with standard features including wide side ramps, flexible stall configurations, and dual-door emergency access, reducing loading difficulties, and improving horse and handler well-being.
The SafeTack Reverse Slant Load design is available in our bumper pull, gooseneck, and living quarter models, each equipped with the SafeBump® roofing and SafeKick® walls for enhanced safety and comfort.

SafeTack Reverse Slant Load Horse Trailer Unique Features
Double D Trailers’ SafeTack design was awarded the U.S. Patent in 2015 because of its unique layout and features that include rear-facing stalls for better balancing, extra-wide side loading, side ramp, flexible configurations, and emergency access. We didn’t invent the reverse load horse trailer…but we sure made it is a much safer and more comfortable environment to transport horses.
1. Rear Facing Stalls for Better Balancing
Horses in the rear-facing direction balance better, minimizing adjustments and enhancing stability during transport. Any sudden slowdowns will cause the horse to brace with their stronger rear end. Horses can also lower and stretch out their head to counter-balance in this orientation, resulting in less fatigue, less stress, and a more natural ride.
Unlike forward-facing travel, which causes continuous bracing and joint strain, the SafeTack reverse load design helps horses arrive less fatigued and ready for events.
2. Easier Loading with SafeTack
The SafeTack storage area is a fully enclosed compartment that swings completely open with the door. This leaves a wide-open entryway in the rear of the trailer for safer (and easier) loading and unloading.
Conventional slant load horse trailers have a stationary rear tack storage area that blocks a large section of the trailer’s rear entrance. This requires both horse and handler to squeeze through a narrow door resulting in unsafe conditions and a nervous horse.
3. Side Ramp for Less Stressful Loading and Unloading
Studies show backing off a trailer is highly stressful for horses. SafeTack's side ramp allows handlers to load from the side, walk horses into a rear-facing stall, and unload directly off the back. This walk-on-walk-off design eliminates backward movement, reducing stress and the risk of injury. The extra-wide side door provides ample space for horses to enter and exit calmly, unlike traditional trailers with narrow ramps that can cause anxiety and injury. Double-hinged partitions make it easy to maneuver within the trailer and your horse will never need to back off again!
4. Option to Use Reverse or Forward Orientation
The Safetack Reverse Horse Trailer can work for horses in either the forward or reverse-facing direction. This dual purpose design is handy if you are trailering a friend’s horse who is not used to the reverse direction. Horses can load from the side door for rear-facing travel or from the rear entry for forward-facing orientation. (Although, we’ve heard from our customers that even “first-time” riders do fine with the reverse orientation!)
One of our customers explained that she uses the reverse-facing direction for longer hauls, but often loads her horses in the forward direction when parking at an event that blocks the side ramp and door. She can load from the back and then offload by simply turning her horse around to walk off.
5. Emergency Access to All Horses
SafeTack’s double-door design allows rapid access to each horse in emergencies. Unlike many slant load horse trailers with limited entry points, the Safetack Reverse Load Horse Trailers include a wide side ramp and rear exit, allowing handlers quick access to every stall in the case of an emergency. This design enhances handler and horse safety by supporting prompt evacuation. On a conventional slant load trailer, all horses in the rear need to be unloaded before you can access that front horse.
Double D Reverse Load Horse Trailers Top Safety Features
Each of our trailers comes with features like tubular head dividers for better ventilation, overhead roof vents, SafeBump roofing, SafeKick walls, Z-Frame construction, Rumber flooring for less road vibration, and an interior designed to resist overheating.
Our slant load horse trailers also have an extra divider at the rear of the trailer so the rearmost horse is only able to unload when you are completely ready to walk them off the trailer.

Double D Trailers is known for making extremely safe designs. Not only that, we also focus our efforts on making custom trailers for our clients. This means almost any slant load trailer we offer can be set up with a rear-facing orientation.
So, it doesn’t matter if you want a 2-horse bumper pull, a 3-horse gooseneck, or a large living quarters trailer…each of them can be built with the rear facing design. Our one-horse bumper pull has no side ramp, but we’ve added options to walk the horse on and turn around to be in the rear-facing position.

What Customers Say About the SafeTack Reverse Slant Load Horse Trailer
Roxana’s Story (Foxx Hunter Farms, California)
When Roxana was looking for a new trailer for her large thoroughbred and warmblood horses, she stumbled across a Double D Trailers article about horse trailer safety features.
She wanted a horse trailer that could keep her large breed horses safe and comfortable on the road. She said, “I knew I wanted a trailer with both side loading and rear loading doors as an extra safety precaution.”
So she started customizing and designing her reverse load horse trailer that was perfect for her horses. For Roxana, the design process went smoothly. She said, “the design process was easy due to the expertise of Brad Heath. He was extremely thorough and knowledgeable.”
And the day her trailer arrived at Foxx Hunter Farms, her home in California, she was thrilled. She was so happy she decided to go with a rear facing design to keep her horses safe, relaxed, and comfortable in the trailer during travel.
Roxana is just one of many happy Double D Trailers customers. Discover what horse owners across the country have to say about their Double D Trailers and the custom horse trailer design process.
Reverse Straight Load Horse Trailer: Why This Model Is Not Available at Double D Trailers
We do not offer reverse-facing in a straight load for safety reasons. If you get rear-ended (which is a good possibility these days with cell phones and texting), you have no crumple zone protection at all for your horse and their face/head is directly at the back doors. Simply put, it's a death trap.
On the SafeTack, there is a huge crumple zone (the SafeTack compartment) and extra safety cage protection built in for rear-end collisions. In addition, butt bars/chest bars can be dangerous, which is why we recommend against straight loads altogether.
Not to mention in a straight load configuration, you can ONLY reverse load, no option of forward facing ever. Also, it ends up being an excessively long trailer (heavy) compared to the compact footprint of the SafeTack Reverse.

Would the trailer still ride and handle well?
SafeTack Reverse Slant Load Horse Trailers are designed so that if you haul a horse in any stall, you will never have an issue or unsafe load. There are many important safety advantages to the patented SafeTack design, which we discussed in the article How The Reverse Haul Horse Trailer Design Helps Horses.
In a straight load reverse configuration, the axles would need to be moved forward for the shift in the location of the horse weight being farther forward. If you ever tried to haul with the partition removed in a box stall configuration and have a single horse maneuver to the back of the trailer with his body weight, you could end up with a very unsafe load causing the trailer to begin swaying suddenly.
